2020 is finally over! As we’ve all experienced, it was perhaps the most tumultuous, uncertain, and challenging year that many of us have ever endured. While we are excited to move on to a new chapter (and year) ahead, I wanted to first take this opportunity to reflect on this whirlwind of a year.

Though 2020 was extremely tough on us all, it was also quite a momentous year for us at Intuition Robotics. Our team certainly had its fair share of challenges — and we’ve definitely grown in unsurmountable ways.

We were very fortunate to have remained in operations…

Digital companions are the natural evolution of today’s digital assistants (i.e. Siri, Alexa, etc.).

Over the last 5 years alone, the use of digital assistants worldwide has steadily climbed at warp speed. In fact, according to Statista, around 3.25 billion digital voice assistants were used in 2019, and 4.2 billion are anticipated to be used by the end of 2020. Those numbers are expected to continue to grow tremendously throughout these next few years, roughly doubling to 8.4 billion by 2024.

By now, many of us heavily rely on digital assistants (such as Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, and otherwise) to simplify and speed up virtually every aspect of our lives — from organizing our…

If there’s one phrase that we’ve heard countless times throughout this pandemic, it’s that “humans are social beings.” We absolutely are — and our innate ability to form bonds and make connections with those around us is an essential component of who we are.

A human user interacting with ElliQ, demonstrating the evolving, complex human-agent relationship.

Yet today, perhaps the most prevalent, perpetual “relationship” within many of our lives — especially as we self-isolate at home — is not with other people, but rather, with technology.

We each have a unique bond with the tech in our lives, and we’re constantly interacting with different devices, agents, and interfaces throughout the entire…

Every year, more and more of us are using AI agents, such as voice assistants, within our cars on a regular basis.

In the near future, poactivity and context-awareness will make all the difference.

In fact, one large-scale survey found that nearly half of consumers today use in-car voice assistants — and by 2022, they predict that approximately 73% of consumers will use an in-car assistant. Up until now, we’ve primarily used these assistants in a utilitarian, command-based format — they wait for us to give them a command, and they carry out our requests accordingly.

What if they also interacted with us proactively, interjecting and making suggestions based on our…

Designing human-agent interactions (HAI) is a complex, yet highly creative process.

In the last few years alone, user experience (UX) has quickly become the driving force behind nearly every form of technology that we interact with. Some might even go as far as to argue that in certain cases, the design of a product is even more important than its utility. Whether it’s a voice user interface, wearable gadget, or otherwise, now more than ever, people are yearning for seamless, personalized experiences — and with the growing presence of agents embedded into the products we use every day, human-agent interaction (HAI) design will be even more critical going forward.

We want…

Q&A with David Cynman, UX Researcher at Intuition Robotics
Q&A with David Cynman, UX Researcher at Intuition Robotics
David Cynman, UX Researcher at Intuition Robotics, is an integral part of our team.

David Cynman is a UX researcher that joined our team almost one year ago. His fascinating role involves a wide range of tasks related to ElliQ’s research process, from helping with recruitment and installation, to checking in with and surveying users, analyzing data, and much more. We sat down with David to find out more about his unique outlook and experience after working on ElliQ and gaining further insight on technology for older adults.

IR: Can you tell us a little bit about your background, and how you became involved in the field of UX research? DC: Like many UX…

ElliQ helping with senior loneliness
ElliQ helping with senior loneliness
ElliQ: Helping older adults combat loneliness and isolation amid COVID-19.

We founded Intuition Robotics with the goal of helping older adults cope with loneliness and social isolation. Never has this been more important than right now.

COVID-19 has made a bad situation worse for millions of older adults. Many were socially isolated before, and now it is the same, only more so. I wanted to share with you what we are doing and the results we are seeing using ElliQ as an intervention. We hope that the silver lining of the pandemic will be that this important topic will become in focus now, and long after COVID-19 is over.

For many older adults, opting to age in place at home (rather than moving to an independent or assisted living facility) has a variety of substantial benefits, from lower costs, to increased comfort and independence, to reduced risks of infection from other residents. Yet unfortunately, for those aging in place alone, without a partner or strong network of loved ones nearby to visit with regularly, it’s often all-too-easy to fall victim to a desolate, socially isolated lifestyle — and the resulting levels of loneliness can quickly become unbearable.

Though the coronavirus has been a serious wakeup call for us all…

Empathy plays an incremental role in our agent design process at Intuition Robotics.

At our core, humans are social beings. We’re naturally inclined to seek out and form connections and attachments with those around us, whether they’re with other people, our pets, and otherwise. And while there are several key personality traits that ultimately contribute to our ability to connect with others, one of the most impactful of these is our ability to exhibit empathy.

What exactly is empathy? According to Wondra and Ellsworth, researchers at the University of Michigan, “The essence of empathy, agreed upon by most empathy researchers, is feeling what another person feels because something happens to them.” In other…

why auto OEMs should think about their custom in-car digital companion
The automotive industry is rapidly changing, and in-car digital companions will be a crucial component of the in-car experience going forward.

Throughout the last few years, voice assistants have rapidly transitioned from a thing of the future to the new norm. According to recent data from Statista, in 2019, about 3.25 billion voice assistants were used in devices across the globe — 110 million in the United States alone. And by 2022, they predict those numbers will nearly double to 6.41 billion users. …
